Vienna-based conductor Daniel Gyu-seo Lee began studying the violin at the age of five. He studied orchestral conducting at Seoul National University before continuing his postgraduate study at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. He also studied at the Chigiana Academy under Maestro Daniele Gatti, where he made his operatic debut at the Festival conducting Rossini's Il signor Bruschino. He has also benefited from the guidance of Andrés Orozco-Estrada, Marin Alsop and Johannes Prinz (Wiener Singverein.)
He has conducted the Wiener Symphoniker, the Prague Philharmonia, the Danish National Symphony Orchestra and the Korean National Symphony Orchestra as part of competitions and workshops. He also appears regularly as a guest conductor with Incheon Philharmonic, Daejeon Philharmonic, City of Pohang Symphony, and National Orchestra for Contemporary Music, among others in Korea. Having been invited to major international conducting competitions such as Besançon and Malko, he won second prize at the International Music Competition Vienna.
Since 2014, he has served as the Founding Artistic Director of the Orchestral Ensemble Seoul, a chamber orchestra designated as a Governmental Arts Organisation by Seoul City in 2020. His projects encompass the complete Beethoven Symphonies and Piano Concertos with internationally acclaimed soloists at Seoul Arts Center. Furthermore, he is actively having masterclasses for younger protégés and youth orchestras through institutions like Steinway & Sons Korea and the Seoul Arts High School. A recording artist for NCM Klassik, recent releases include Mozart Symphony No.29(2018) and Beethoven Symphony No.3(2022), all with the OES.
He is the recipient of the Award for the Remarkable Artist of the Year(2018) awarded by the Committee of Korean Arts Critics.
Gyu-Seo is based in Seoul and Vienna.
